Charities in Ayr and the surrounding areas have benefitted from a unique initiative to provide crucial support to those in need.

ABP Port of Ayr's successful fundraising endeavour saw it turn scrap metal, left over from the Vattenfall’s South Kyle wind farm project which came through the port, into a source of substantial donations, providing crucial support to various charitable organisations in the Ayr and Troon communities.

The organisation creatively utilised the leftover scrap metal from the wind farm construction to generate funds that would be directly invested back into the community.

One of the beneficiaries of this initiative was the Newton Tenants' Association, located just behind the port.

Recognising the impact of the wind turbine components passing through streets during the construction phase, the association received an astounding £10,228.83 donation from ABP.

This contribution will undoubtedly empower the Newton Tenants' Association to continue its invaluable work in the local community.

Helen Russell Newton, secretary of Newton Tenants' Association, said: “We are deeply grateful to ABP’s Port of Ayr for the incredibly generous donation, which will play a significant role in helping us to continue our mission of enhancing the lives of those in our community.

“The wind turbine components passing through our streets during the South Kyle wind farm project were a constant reminder of progress and change, and this donation solidifies ABP's commitment to the local community.

“With this financial backing, we can further our efforts to create a more vibrant, resilient and supportive community for all. Thank you, ABP for making a meaningful difference in our lives."

Other charities benefitting from the cause included Ayrshire Cancer Support, Ayrshire Hospice, the Fisherman’s Mission, Whiteley’s Retreat, and Aberlour Children’s Charity, who each received £1,000 in support of their respective causes.
