South Ayrshire rugby union sides enjoy perfect weekend

With the Six Nations taking place at Murrayfield last weekend, many teams were without a fixture until Saturday, March 15.

Though it was worth the wait for clubs like Ayr RFC who picked up a fantastic result as the National Premiership regular season draws to a close.

The Millbrae side will have a chance to top the standings before heading into the play-offs next weekend after a resounding 93-0 win away to Hawick.

With two matches left to play, Ayr are five points clear of second placed Heriot's and boast a far superior points difference.

They can make top spot official on Saturday, March 22, as they host their nearest rivals in their penultimate regular season fixture.

Elsewhere in the division, local rivals Marr RFC ensured they will not end the season bottom of the pile.

A 39-26 win away at last placed Musselburgh means the Troon outfit cannot be caught by their opponents - and will be looking up the standings as they aim to rise from second to last with four matches still to play.

Only one other senior men's side from Ayrshire was in action this weekend - with Kilmarnock travelling to take on Dalziel on Friday, March 14.

It was a worthwhile trip for the East Ayrshire outfit who ran out 47-31 winners to further cement their position atop the West Division One table.

Killie will face the only side who can stop them on Saturday, March 22, when they travel to face Lenzie.

While both clubs have fixtures to complete afterwards, any match winner will be the title favourite heading into the latter stages of their campaign.

In women's rugby, both Ayr and Marr emulated the success of their male counterparts this weekend.

For Marr, it was a unique away trip to play Orkney on Saturday - a journey which required a flight out to the match.

The travel was worth it though as the Troon side were 43-22 winners in the National Plate match.

Despite the win, it will be the team's last game of the season as they were unable to progress from the pool stage.

While Ayr's season is still going after a resounding 47-5 win over Bishopton in the National Shield.

The victory secured top spot in the pool stage of the competition and will give the South Ayrshire outfit home advantage as they play Oban Lorne in the quarter-finals next weekend.
