Maybole's Kayleigh Haggo is looking at the positives after kicking off her Paralympic campaign in Paris.

The Boccia star faced tough opponent Jeong Soyeong of South Korea and, despite losing 1-3, she was quick to take the positives.

She said: “I feel so good, I played so well in that game. Soyeong is a very good player and I’m just so happy with how I played and hopefully I can play like that again tomorrow and see what happens.

“I was really nervous going into the call room but, as soon as I came out on court, I was totally focussed on what I’m here to do.

"Nailing my first ball helped settle my nerves. I was so focussed on what I was doing but it’s so nice to have my family here.

"I’m looking forward to tomorrow – if I play like that, I’ll be happy and hopefully I can come out with a win. Let’s see what happens.”

A world and European champion frame-runner, Kayleigh was devastated to find out her sport would not be included in the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

A dream she’d had since she first started frame-running at 12, to compete at a Paralympics, seemed to be over.

But Kayleigh wasn’t willing to give it up, and she started playing boccia with the aim of making the ParalympicsGB team.

The sport sees athletes throw, kick or use a ramp to propel a ball onto the court with the aim of getting closest to a 'jack' ball

From having played boccia only a handful of times, in two years Kayleigh reached 13th in the world rankings and was named in the team for Paris 2024.

In Paris, she finds herself up against Jeong Soyeong of South Korea, a tough opponent currently ranked world number three, and Portugal’s Ana Correia who won silver at the European Para Championships last year
