A former Troon teacher has captained Great Britain to a gold medal at the basketball European Championships.

On June 29, former Marr College teacher Tom Campbell captained the GB over 70s men's team to win gold at the European Championship tournament held in Pesaro, Italy.

With 15 GB teams participating in the competition at various age groups, and in both men's and women's categories, the over 70s men's team, featuring seven Scottish players, were the only team to win gold at the event.

They defeated Lithuania in a thrilling final - their sixth game in seven days.

Campbell, who coached basketball for 25 years at Marr College and 20 years at club level with Troon Tornadoes, scored seven of his 12 points in the fourth quarter of the final as GB won 45-42.
