AN AYR youth football team has overcome the odds and won a prestigious European tournament in Spain.

Ayr Boswell's 2008 team took on and swept aside teams from Spain, France, Finland, Sweden, England, Ireland and Scotland to win the Barcelona Cup, an international youth tournament held in the Catalan city.

Not only did the team win the trophy, but the club's goalkeeper Cameron Cowan won Goalkeeper of the Tournament - while Finlay George won Player of the Tournament.

It is a special time for grassroots football club, with 2023 also being the team's 60th anniversary.

A spokesperson said: "My god did they give the Scottish crowd something to cheer by winning game after game after game.

"They topped the group winning all three games where they would move into the semi-final facing a French elite team who hadn’t lost a goal.

"The boys would run out 2-0 winners in hard fought game. Moving into the final playing In 22 degree heat could the wee team from Scotland really win the Barcelona cup? Yes was the answer winning the final 1-0 in an end to end thriller.

"After the trophy celebrations it was back to the hotel where other teams from other nations would join in also.

"Players, coaches, parents and the cup ended up in the pool with wild celebrations that would carry on into the wee hours.

"The boys have made memories that will last forever and a day.
