MUSSELBURGH RFC 10

MARR RUGBY 27

TITLE-chasing Marr Rugby had to work hard to break down a stuffy and determined Musselburgh defence but finally ran out bonus-point try winners.

Until just before half-time, scoring had been restricted to a penalty for each side. Whilst Marr enjoyed most of the possession and territory they were unable to find a chink of light in a solid wall of defenders.

As the half drew to a close Marr made a determined effort using forward power to bludgeon through the home defence and after several phases took play to the Musselburgh try line from where Ben Johnston crashed through like a wrecking ball. Colin Sturgeon converted.

Marr added a second try shortly after the start of the second half and once again it was another forwards dominated power play that gain the points as William Farquhar emerged with the score from the bottom of an eight man pile over.

Eight minutes later Marr added try number three as Marr finally managed to get some decent phases of interplay involving their forwards and backs. Tom Steven was released and made a powerful break to score in the corner

Musselburgh stiffened their defensive resolve and once again Marr were unable to find the elusive fourth try that would earn them the vital bonus point. With five minutes remaining the breakthrough occurred and in a moment of magical solo play, Tom Steven set off on a mesmerising run and raced home from 50 metres

The final score was a consolation try from Musselburgh’s pacey winger Gregor Tait and was just reward for their efforts.

MARR RUGBY 21

STIRLING COUNTY 31

SUPPLEMENTED by six Marr Rugby 3s players, drafted up to help make up a squad, the 2s gave a very good account against a strong Stirling side. Stirling took an early lead an built on this before Marr managed to claw back some points.

But it was too little too late and although Marr scored three tries they got scant reward for their efforts.

Marr Rugby 2nd XV man of the match – Neil Wallace.
