THORNIEWOOD UNITED 4

ANNBANK UNITED 1

BANKIES blew an early lead as they lost this mid-table tussle in Lanarkshire.

Five minutes in the visitors went ahead when Jordan Ryan drove the ball across the box and Jack Taylor turned it past the Thorniewood goalie.

The lead was shortlived though, as Bankies lost the ball and Thorniewood quickly played down the field, a pass took a deflection off Alan Orr and as John McWilliam attempted to keep the ball in play he slipped and played it straight to the Thorniewood striker who had a simple tap in.

The in 24 minutes it was 2-1 and another poorly conceded goal. A badly-timed Lee McClymont challenge gave Thorniewood a free-kick.The set-piece was deflected off the wall and it rolled past McWilliam. For the rest of the first half, Thorniewood looked the more likely to score again on the attack as the Bankies struggled to get a foothold.

Early in the second half, a Thorniewood corner was met with a glancing header that went narrowly wide but in 56 minutes it was 3-1. A cross to the back post found an unmarked striker who headed the ball down into the ground, off the crossbar and past John McWilliam.

Lee McClymont and Ross McManus combined nicely on the left with McClymont driving into the box and driving the ball across the area but no one was there to finish. Thorniewood dragged a shot wide and then Tommy Sloan and John McWilliam were on hand to block another effort as the pushed for a fourth to kill the game. With four minutes left they killed the game when a long ball was played towards the Bankies area, which McWilliam should have come to collect but the keeper was indecisive and left it too late, allowing the Thorniewood striker to get there first and head past him.
