TRIBUTES were paid to Ayr United all-time great Peter Price before Saturday's home League One clash with Stranraer at Somerset Park.

And the Honest Men turned in a performance which would have made him proud as they secured a 3-1 win to move back into top spot in Ladbrokes League One.,

Peter died last month aged 83 and people turned out in good numbers to pay tribute at his funeral at St Quivox RC Church in Prestwick on Friday.

The former striker will forever go down in Somerset Park folklore for his vintage frontline performances.

He scored some 213 goals in seven seasons and will go down as the club's most prolific goalscorer of all time. He was a real terracing idol and his feats will surely never be topped.

United manager Ian McCall said: "Peter Price was a legend at Somerset Park and made such a huge contribution to the club.

In two seasons in the old Second Division, Price scored 105 competitive goals.

He was seen as the ultimate competitor who never gave up and that was surely best illustrated on March 29,. 1957 when Ayr were losing 4-1 in league fixture at Hamilton.

One of his finest hours came in the old First Division in September 959, when Price scored a hat-trick against as the Honest Men defeated a highly fancied Motherwell team 5-2 at Somerset Park.

Then in 1960 he scored the equaliser as Ayr drew 1-1 with a Hearts team who went on to win the First Division title.
