Part of Princes Steet in Edinburgh has been closed after a suspicious package was found in a Halifax branch. 

Police were called at around 12.30pm, and businesses in the street's west end have been evacuated.

Officers remain at the scene and a police cordon has been put in place.

A police spokesperson said: "We received a report of a suspicious package having been received at a business premises on Princes Street at around 12.30pm on Thursday March 7.

"The building has been evacuated as a precaution and officers are in attendance to progress inquiries.

"We will provide further updates in due course."

Public transport in the area has been affected, with buses being diverted away from the police cordon.

It comes after a controlled explosion took place at Glasgow University after a package was sent to the mailroom yesterday.
