MSP Laura Moodie hails £2 bus fare cap rollout in Ayrshire

The £2 bus fare cap was first secured by the Scottish Greens as part of budget negotiations in 2024, when a pilot project was rolled out across the Highlands and Islands, saving regular commuters hundreds of pounds.

Now, this has been extended to bus services across the Strathclyde region, which includes Ayrshire, making bus travel cheaper for those who live and work in the area to benefit from. 

Laura Moodie, South Scotland MSP for the Greens, said: “I am absolutely delighted that our plans for a £2 bus fare cap will finally be rolled out for people in Ayrshire. This is a crucial step for tackling the cost of living and our climate ambitions. 

“Green policies like the bus fare cap will be a big boost for regular commuters, saving them money and giving more people the option to commute cheaply by bus to and from work or visiting friends. 

“We need a public transport system that is reliable and affordable so that more people will choose to catch the bus.

“We have already made great progress with free bus travel for young people. A £2 bus fare cap means many more people will get some relief from the ever-rising cost of living in Ayrshire. 

“It is only fair to say it should be expanded across the rest of Scotland too. The Scottish Greens want to make sure that public transport is affordable and accessible to everyone regardless of where they live.”
