PLANS are still on track for Prestwick Airport to welcome the RAF's Voyager A330 refuelling fleet this summer.

The airport's burgeoning reputation as one of the UK's most important transport hubs was strengthened last year with the award of a £1.2 million Ministry of Defence contract.

Prestwick will be the fleet's short-term home for a number of months as resurfacing works are carried out at RAF Brize Norton in England.

A contract has been awarded to the airport as part of Project MACE, which is designed to keep the UK's refuelling operations going during the resurfacing.

Upgrades at Prestwick Airport have been taking place as part of the contract, including the installation of new concrete jacking pads.

The Ministry of Defence previously confirmed that without Prestwick Airport, “the Voyager fleet will be unavailable to support the Fast Jet fleet which critically defends UK airspace”.

The airport was noted as the only airport in the UK which could accommodate the seven Voyager aircraft.

Work at Prestwick Airport has been ongoing since last year in preparation for the arrival of the Voyager fleet next summer.

When asked by the Advertiser for an update on the planned Voyager move to Prestwick Airport, an MOD official confirmed that the plans have not changed.
