A NEW gym in Ayr is bringing a fresh approach to fitness in the town.

Hitsona, which opened in January 2024, has no mirrors, small classes, and a focus on individual progress.

The gym is the brainchild of Steven McFarlane, a local fitness expert who wanted to create a space where everyone, regardless of age, fitness level, or experience, could feel comfortable and confident while working out.

He explained: “Gyms can be intimidating places for a lot of people. We wanted to build something different—a gym where you can focus on yourself without worrying about anyone else or what you look like.

"That’s why we don’t have mirrors, and why we keep the class sizes small, with just 10 people per session.”

The gym’s unique format is based around 25-minute high-intensity interval training (HIIT) sessions.

One of Hitsona’s features is the use of wearable monitors, which track members’ progress throughout their workouts.

Each member’s performance is displayed on TV screens during the session, showing their heart rate, effort level, and other stats in real-time.

Steven added: “This system helps people focus on their own workouts, without worrying about anyone else.

“It’s all about seeing how far you can push yourself—each session, you’re competing with who you were yesterday, not with anyone else.”

McFarlane is supported by trainers Mary and Helena, both of whom are dedicated to helping members reach their fitness goals in a safe, friendly environment.
