Staff at a popular Ayr ice cream shop are celebrating a 'scooper' result after being crowned the best dessert shop in the region.

Renaldo's picked up the Best Dessert Shop gong at the Ayrshire regional edition of Scotlands Business Awards.

The landmark shop has been at the top of the Sandgate since the 1920s, then known as the Wellington Cafe.

It has been passed through generations of Italians for decades and is now owned by husband and wife team Linda and Silvio Galli.

The shop has picked up the Ayrshire gong for the second year in a row, and last year went on to win the national Best Dessert Shop title.

Silvio has praised his staff for all their hard work, and says the gong is a reward for their efforts.

He said: "It's great to win for the second year in a row, it makes me wonder if it's a fix sometimes.

"All the staff work really hard, and they were delighted to win because they put a lot into it throughout the year. They make everything in the shop, and have got to make sure everything is consistently good for our customers.

"Sometimes you can make a great product but if you don't keep on top of it, it just drops. We also buy great products in from local suppliers.

"We are hoping to go one better now and pick up the Scottish title for the second year in a row."

Silvio reveals the shop has enjoyed a busy summer, despite the weather not being at its best over the past few months.

He explained: "Most days I'm worried because of the weather but people are still coming in to see us. It's consistently busy but not mobbed, and it can actually be quieter on the hottest days because it's simply too hot.

"We're now moving onto creating all our chocolates and ice cream for the festive season, the fun never stops!"
