This week, we take a look back at the Ayr Advertiser headlines and photos in July 2009.

And there was plenty going on across South Ayrshire, with local galas, bridge closures and a campaign to save an Ayr beauty spot.

Troon crowned its new Gala Queen and Princess in July 2009 at the town’s mini-fair in glorious sunshine Struthers Primary pupil Natasha Bailie, left, was Queen, with Carys Calder of Muirhead Primary as the Princess.

The fight to save Craigie Woods went national as residents called on Prime Minister Gordon Brown to save the Ayr beauty spot in 2009. Over 280 people had so far signed an online petition asking the Government to stop the destruction of Ayr’s historic woods for a redevelopment of the University of the West of Scotland’s Ayr Campus. Niall Murphy and Sam Currie, pupils at St Cuthbert’s Primary, were officially crowned as Gala King and Queen of Carrick in the summer of 2009.

Crucial safety work saw Turners Bridge in Ayr closed in 2009 as £230,000 worth of refurbishment work got underway. The Ayr bridge was temporarily closed until October that year. Crosshill Community Association held its annual village fete in summer 2009, with Queen Morven Archibald, 11, crowned by head teacher Mrs Baty, ably assisted by page Alexander Bryson, six.

The Nursery section at Dailly Primary School created a beautiful, sensory Butterfly Garden in 2009  and ‘Weed’ the well-known TV star came along to do the honours and cut the ribbon at the opening celebration.
