Proud Ayr United boss Brian Reid was cheered on by his two children as Ayr United clinched promotion amid joyous scenes in Lanarkshire in May 2009. Son Kyle, 10, and daughter Christina, seven, had their dad’s name on the back of their strips as they watched the Honest Men defeat Airdrie United in the First Division playoff at the Excelsior Stadium.

Ayr Advertiser: Prestwick

Prestwick kids raised £200 for Save The Children after taking part in a fun run in 2009. The 150 kids of Glenburn, St Ninian’s and Kingcase Primary Schools ran the 1km at the town’s Oval track.

Ayr Advertiser: Trekkers

A magnificent amount of £107,179 was raised by a group of determined trekkers who took on the Great Wall of China in 2009. The men and women of the Ayrshire Hospice China Trekkers reunited at the Hospice itself to hand over the cheque.

Troon Rotary Ladies made a fantastic donation of £500 to help some of Ayrshire’s most deserving children in May 2009. The women were delighted to present the cheque to Save the Children Ayrshire Branch at their Annual General Meeting at the Piersland House Hotel.

The 2009 Robert Burns Humanitarian Award was given to Guy Willoughby, founder Of Halo Trust which removed war debris and millions of unexploded landmines. The presentation was made by First Minister Alex Salmond.

Young golfers in South Ayrshire have enjoyed a masterclass with golf legend Jack Nicklaus at Turnberry. The 18 time major winner was in the area promoting unsung heroes in the game for the Royal Bank of Scotland.
