A SOUTH of Scotland MSP has launched a search for a 'local hero' who has made a positive difference to the lives of others.
The nominee chosen by Labour's Colin Smyth will join MSPs and other local heroes from across Scotland at a special commemorative even on Saturday, June 29 to mark 25 years of the Scottish Parliament.
The event will celebrate Scottish culture as well as marking the quarter-century since the parliament was officially reconvened on July 1, 1999.
'Local heroes' have taken part in the opening ceremonies of the Scottish Parliament in 2007, 2011, 2016 and 2021.
Launching the search, Colin Smyth said: “In the short time I have been MSP, and in the decade before that as a local councillor, I have come across so many local people who make such a difference to people’s lives in our community.
"They often do so with no recognition whatsoever.
“Along with other MSPs, we want to celebrate the achievements of our Local Heroes from across Scotland at a special event in the Scottish Parliament to mark 25 years since it was re-convened.
“I would urge local people to put forward nominations. It could be friends, family or work colleagues or even potential Local Heroes themselves.
“As the Parliament marks 25 years, it’s a great idea that local heroes are at the centre of what will be a special event in the Parliament."
