Pupils from Annbank Primary School in Mossblown have urged their elected representatives to help them improve biodiversity and tackling littering in the village.
The P1 and 2 classes have been participating in UNICEF’s ‘Outright’ campaign on climate change where they have been learning about the importance of biodiversity and the impact of waste on the local environment.
The children this week met with Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley MSP Elena Whitham to share their opinions on having more bins for the village to encourage proper litter disposal.
They have also called for areas to be designated for wildflowers to improve local biodiversity.
Ms Whitham praised the Annbank pupils for their work and passion and has now agreed to work with local councillor Julie Dettbarn to address these issues.
The SNP MSP said: “I was delighted to receive an invitation from pupils at Annbank Primary School to find out about the work they have been undertaking regarding biodiversity, recycling, and waste.
“They have asked for additional bins for the village and wildflower areas to help encourage pollinators. I will now work with my colleague Cllr Julie Dettbarn to take their calls forward.
“It is always wonderful to see our young people engaged and enthusiastic in raising their voices and improving their community.
"They could teach adults a thing or two.”
Cllr Dettbarn said: “It is amazing to see the inspiring young citizens of Annbank Primary School actively doing their bit locally for the planet, tackling littering and promoting recycling and biodiversity in their school and wider community.
"I am delighted to work with Elena to support these important projects in every way we can.”
