Plans to expand a petrol station shop in South Ayrshire have been given the green light.

A planning application had been submitted by Glenhead Garage in Coylton to nearly double the size of its existing shop.

The extension would include a storage area and an accessible toilet, leaving more of the original building as a service area for customers and goods.

The petrol station currently has six pumps alongside other facilities including air and a vacuum system, but only alterations to the shop were proposed.

The plans have now been approved by council officers, who say that the increased shop space will not impact nearby businesses in Coylton.

Planning documents state: "Given the small-scale nature of the proposals, it is not considered that the increased retail space within the filling station shop will compromise the vitality or viability of the parade of units operating within the Joppa area of Coylton.

"With regard to visual amenity in the locale, it is considered that the design, massing, scale and external finishes of the proposed store extension are appropriate.

"There are no residential amenity concerns arising from the extension given its location on the eastern elevation of the existing shop, and that the retail element of the business, although marginally increased, will continue to operate as present."
