South Ayrshire Council has issued advice about cold callers pretending to be from the local authority.
Reports have been received by police across the region in recent months about scammers claiming to work for local councils.
The advice to residents is to close the door and check with the council before allowing them inside or to continue talking.
A South Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: "Has a cold caller told you they are working for the local council?
"Never take their word for it - close the door and call the council using the public number 0300 123 0900.
"Legitimate callers will be happy to wait while you do this."
