AN empty gift shop on the Isle of Arran has been given the green light to turn into a takeaway.

We previously reported that plans were submitted in January to repurpose the Boat House in Brodick  into a food takeaway.

The wooden building was most recently used to sell beach novelty items and as a base for putting green admissions.

It will now see the business sell hot and cold breakfast and lunch items, freshly baked treats, a varied coffee menu, Arran Dairies ice cream and milkshakes.

Other food items on the proposed menu include 'create your own loaded fries', homemade soup, stacked steak burgers, toasted sandwiches and filled paninis.

The proposed hours of operation would be Monday to Sunday from 9am to 4pm.

In a report of the handling of the case, a council official said: "We will support developments that will have a positive impact on the vitality, vibrancy and viability of the island and avoid unacceptable adverse impacts on the environment, amenity or the tourism offer of the area.

"The proposal would bring an existing commercial building within the settlement back into use without adverse amenity or environmental effects.  It will contribute positively to the tourism offer, being located adjacent to a large car park and the beach.

"The applicants' intention to pursue the re-opening of the adjacent putting green would be a positive factor for the provision of tourism activities within the area and, although not definitive or included in the application proposal, is another consideration in favour of the proposal."

The plans were approved with conditions of an approved emergency plan agreed with the flooding authority at North Ayrshire Council and details of the ventilation system for the kitchen are submitted for approval.
