An exciting new exhibition showcasing the works of William Gillies has opened its doors at Ayr's Rozelle House.

'William Gillies: Modernism and Nation' reveals his embrace of Modernist alternatives, unlocking hidden meanings in his diverse works.

Accompanying the exhibition is a new book on the artist, 'William Gillies: Modernism and Nation in British Art' by Andrew McPherson.

The exhibition will be open daily, Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sundays from midday to 5pm, until June 16.

Entry is free to the event, which is sponsored by the Royal Scottish Academy and Museums and Galleries Scotland.

Councillor Alec Clark, South Ayrshire Council's portfolio holder for tourism, culture and rural affairs, said: "Gillies loved sketching and painting whilst touring across Scotland.

"'Modernism and Nation' extends Gillies' legacy, offering audiences across the country a chance to discover a new story about one of our great artists."

Sandy Wood, the RSA's head of collections, added: "We are delighted to be presenting William Gillies: Modernism and Nation, a touring exhibition from the Royal Scottish Academy, which repositions the life and art of one of Scotland's most influential modern masters."
