A BANK branch in the centre of Ayr is set to close later this year.

The Barclays branch on the High Street will close in May, according to the company's website.

A downturn in the number of customers visiting the branch due to alternative ways to bank is being cited as a major reason.

The bank will close its doors on Friday, May 10.

Revealing the reasons on the Barclays website, the company says: "95 per cent of people who use our branch have also banked using the app, online and by phone in 2022.

"Less than 10 customers use this branch regularly as the only way to do their banking.

"Six per centof this branch’s customers have used nearby branches in the last 12 months."

Barclays says that no jobs will be put at risk as a result of the closure and that the firm plans to put in place an alternative to a physical bank branch - though details of what form this might take have yet to be announced.

They added: "We’ll stay in your community and you’ll be able to talk to us in person.

"We’re finalising the details of where we’ll be based, and when, to support you with your banking, and we‘ll share the details locally once confirmed."
