DRIVERS in Ayrshire are being warned of a major road closure in the next few days on one of the area's main trunk routes.

Amey is carrying out essential resurfacing of the northbound and southbound A78 and the B746 slip roads on Friday, February 2 and Saturday, February 3.

This scheme, which is valued at £395,000, will complete resurfacing works that began in the autumn of last year.

The work will be carried out under a full road closure between the Meadowhead and Monktonhead roundabouts, with signed diversions in operation which will see drivers directed

From 8pm on Friday, February 2 until 6am on Saturday February 3, there will be a closure of the A78 southbound between Meadowhead and Monktonhead roundabouts.

In addition, there will be a closure of the southbound on-slip road from Auchengate.

Traffic will exit the A78 via the Meadowhead roundabout to join the A759, following Main Street into Loans before turning right onto the A759 Troon Road, and continuing onto Dundonald Road and Portland Street.

From here, traffic will turn left onto the B749 Ayr Street in the centre of Troon, continuing on to South Beach, Craigend Road and Monktonhill Road before turning left onto the A79 and proceeding to Monktonhead roundabout.

Traffic for the Auchengate slip road will follow the A759 southbound to join the above diversion.

From 8pm on Saturday, February 3 until 6am on Sunday, February 4, there will be a closure of the A78 northbound between Monktonhead and Meadowhead roundabouts.

During the Saturday night/Sunday morning closure traffic will be directed off the A78 at the Monktonhead roundabout and on to the A79 and then the B749 towards Troon, before following the same route as the Friday/Saturday diversion in reverse.

Amey says access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works.
