The past year has been another difficult one for far too many people.

Across the world, more and more people still live with war, oppression and persecution, and I stand in solidarity with them all, including the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Here in Ayrshire too many families are still struggling with rising bills, higher mortgages , an NHS in crisis and local services buckling under cuts.

While these hardships have revealed the weaknesses of our two governments, they have reminded us of the strength of our communities.

The hardworking health and social care staff going the extra mile for their patients and the many others working over the festive period so we can spend time with our families.

The volunteers such as local food banks, supporting those in need through the cost-of-living crisis.

The people who have opened their homes to Ukrainian refugees, and others to offer those fleeing war and oppression a life here in Scotland.

Everywhere, we look across Ayrshire we see a caring and compassionate community.

As South Scotland MSP, I am lucky enough to see this first hand as I meet people across the region.

But time and time again I hear the same message: we desperately need change. This isn’t as good as it gets. 2024 can be the year when that change comes. Our best days definitely lie ahead.

So as we enter 2024, let’s resolve to advocate for the change we need.

From my family to yours, I hope the new year ahead brings you peace, health, happiness.
