After serving the community for nearly five decades, Maybole Swimming Pool is set to close its doors for the final time.

Opened in 1975, Maybole Swimming Pool has been a cherished part of the community, providing a 25-metre, four-lane pool and changing rooms.

It will close for the last time at 10pm on Tuesday, December 19.

The town's new pool, within the Maybole Community Campus, will then open its doors on Thursday, January 4, when residents will be able to enjoy upgraded and expanded facilities.

To celebrate the old pool's contribution to the life of the town, events are being held on December 18 and 19 between 7am and 10pm.

Activities include coffee mornings, free of charge access to swimming to allow everyone to take a final dip in the historic pool, and fun activities for children and young people on both evenings.

As well as a pool the same size as the old one, the new facility boasts a changing village, a community meeting room, a fitness suite and sports halls.

Over the first few days, the new ‘Maybole Leisure Club’ will host fun for all the family with taster sessions for fitness classes and gym inductions, fun sessions, and tours of the brand new facility.

From Monday, January 8, 2024, the standard programme will be introduced which will cater to a wide range of interests and age groups.

Councillor Brian Connolly, South Ayrshire Council’s portfolio holder for sport and leisure said: “The closure of Maybole Swimming Pool may mark the end of an era, but it also paves the way for an exciting new chapter for our community.

"The reopening of the pool within Maybole Community Campus, with its upgraded facilities, will provide a modern and inclusive space for residents of all ages to enjoy.

"I would encourage everyone in the area to attend both events."

Councillor Alec Clark, the authority's portfolio holder for tourism, culture and rural affairs, said: “We’re inviting the community to join us to celebrate the legacy of the old pool and bid it farewell.

"It may seem bittersweet, but the new campus will provide an array of exciting activities and amenities for the local community to enjoy, and it’s also great news as it will help to attract new visitors to Maybole and the surrounding area too.”
