I trust you will agree with me that the scenes across Scotland on Bonfire Night were appalling.

Our emergency service workers put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe. My thoughts are with all of those who faced despicable attacks while carrying out their jobs.

Investigations are ongoing and those who committed these crimes must be brought to justice.

Everyone in Scotland should be, and should feel, safe. That is why in my government role as minister for community safety, I am committed to tackling all forms of anti-social behaviour.

We know that reported anti-social behaviour has been on the decline for the past decade, and this should be welcomed. However, the recent disorder on Bonfire Night has shown that where issues arise, they can have very serious consequences for many people.

We therefore must develop a long-term approach to addressing and preventing these sorts of acts. That is why I will be convening an independently chaired working group.

It is nearly 20 years since the Antisocial Behaviour etc. (Scotland) Act 2004 was introduced and it is right that we examine whether this remains fit for purpose and that we assess our wider approach.

Shop local

Turning my attention to our constituency, I want to remind you that it is more important than ever to support local businesses this Christmas.

The Station Hotel fire has resulted in a massive decline in footfall to that side of the town, with businesses suffering the consequences. I have met with many shop owners in the area to hear their concerns and get them to take part in my #shoplocal campaign.

I have also been contacting South Ayrshire Council on behalf of owners to get answers to their questions and concerns. Officials have informed me that they are aiming to have Station Bridge reopened by the end of the year.

This is far from ideal, but it is essential the area is safe for pedestrians and drivers. I am calling for greater transparency to allow for business owners and residents to plan ahead.

Remember that you can benefit from two hours of free on-street parking in Ayr. So please, make an effort to visit businesses in our community this Christmas for your shopping. They have so many unique treasures that would make the perfect gift.
