South Ayrshire Council has released a further update on the status of Ayr Station Hotel.

Firefighters were called to a major blaze at the hotel on the evening of September 25 - and remained on scene for several days until the building could be made safe.

Train services remain suspended between Ayr and Prestwick following the fire.

A council statement today (Monday, November 6) said: "Safety works are progressing at the former Station Hotel building.

"This is complex work, and the safety of the public and contractors is a priority.

"The contractor has now almost fully removed the top of the encapsulation, which will allow them to progress with works in the building.

"Vital work has been carried out to protect a gas main and other utilities on and adjacent to the bridge, as well as the power lines at the train station.

"Station Bridge Road remains closed to pedestrians and traffic. The closure will be in place until safety works have been completed at the southern gable end of the building.

"We’ll continue to keep you updated with more information as it becomes available. A list of FAQs is available on our website here:  https://www.south-ayrshire.gov.uk/ayr-railway-station."
