A planning application to improve access routes to Royal Troon Golf Club ahead of next year’s 152nd Open Championship has been approved.

The club had been seeking permission to carry out various works ahead of the 2024, with the town preparing itself for around 300,000 visitors during the week of the event.

Mhairi Shaw Planning submitted the application, which would see various engineering works taking place in the area.

In their design and access statement, Mhairi Shaw Planning said: “The proposed development relates to a range of specific requirements regarding access routes during the build process for The Open and also for the event itself.

“In order to understand the overwhelming need for the proposed upgrade and improvement of existing access routes, it is worth highlighting the scale of on-site accommodation that is required.

“The Open will incorporate approximately 25,000 m2 of single, two and three storey marquee accommodation and in excess of 20 grandstands throughout the course, providing in the order of 15,000 seats.

“All such, accommodation will be constructed on site within four months.”

Proposals included the upgrading of the existing temporary access to the 18th green and first tee build sites of Royal Troon via Craigend Road/South Beach Road and improvement of the existing greenkeepers’ track on Royal Troon’s 18th hole, in parallel to the line of the existing wall.

Other improvement include the access from Crosbie Road to the greenkeepers’ track on the old Craigend practice holes, and the upgrading of the existing temporary access to the 18th green and first tee build sites of Royal Troon via Craigend Road/South Beach Road.

The 2024 Open Championship runs from Sunday, July 14 to Sunday, July 21.
