A South Ayrshire Council apprentice electrician has won a prestigious award.

The APSE Apprentice of the Year Awards recognises the importance of apprentices and their contribution to frontline services.

APSE is a not-for-profit organisation working with over 250 local authorities throughout the UK.

This year, four apprentices from South Ayrshire Council were shortlisted to the final.

Apprentice electrician, Charlie White, was awarded Apprentice of the Year at the APSE Awards Ceremony last week in Leeds, competing against local authorities from across the UK.

Throughout the apprenticeship, Charlie continuously impressed his team members and managers, passing his Final Integrated Competence Assessment (FICA) with a score of 136 points out of 138 (98.55 per cent).

By winning the award, it highlights Charlies’ hard work, commitment and willingness to learn.

Charlie, who has just finished his fourth year of the apprenticeship and is now a qualified tradesperson, said: “I was delighted to win this award and I'm excited about my career with South Ayrshire Council."

Councillor Martin Kilbride, buildings, housing and environment portfolio holder for South Ayrshire Council, said: “To be nominated at this level alone is something to be immensely proud of. As a council, we were lucky to have four apprentices make it to the final, but for Charlie to be awarded the main prize is incredible.

"This demonstrates the talent that can be unlocked by providing young people with the best opportunities to flourish in their chosen career paths.

"I’m delighted that these awards shine a light on the hardworking individuals that we have in our workforce.”
