Proposals to turn Ayr railway station "grey" have been lodged with planning chiefs.

The plans - submitted to South Ayrshire Council earlier this month - include a covered walkway attached to the existing Station Hotel building.

It's not clear what impact the major fire at the derelict B-listed building on Monday night will have on the proposals as they currently stand.

The application for 'listed building consent' - lodged with the local authority by Network Rail and IDP Architects on September 12 - outlines a vision of a new ticket office and staff facilities, attached to the covered walkway.

Ayr Advertiser:

The alarm was sounded at around 5.30pm on Monday, with firefighters still at the scene the following morning.

Fifteen appliances attended the scene at the height of the blaze, with five appliances and their crews still on site on Tuesday.

Two teenage boys, aged 13 and 17, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Back on September 14, the SAVE Britain's Heritage conservation group produced a report estimating that it would cost £9.2 million to repair and restore the building.

The report claimed that the building was in a much better condition than previously thought.

Also prior to the fire, South Ayrshire Council had estimated it would cost £6m to demolish the southern section of the building alone.

The day after the SAVE report was published, councillors agreed to spend an additional £744,000 on keeping protective sheeting and scaffolding in place around the southern section of the building - where Monday's fire appeared to be at its height.

South Ayrshire Council has been contacted for comment.
