Singer and academic Anne Lorne Gillies was guest of honour at the 2003 Ayr Flower Show when she helped launch a new rose, Pride of Scotland. The royalties from the rose raised funds for both the Hansel Foundation and the Ayrshire Horticultural Association.

Prestwick was officially the hottest place in Scotland for a day last week as the temperature in the town came close to smashing the Scottish record. Jeanette Martin, air traffic control assistant, showed off the device, which measured 29C.

High Road actress Gwyneth Guthrie was the special guest at a Hansel fund-raising event at Ayr Flower Show. After spending Friday afternoon looking at the beautiful array of flowers and plants, Gwyneth, who played Mrs Mack in the popular soap, entertained the evening guests with her repertoire of different and funny characters.

The people of North Ayr had a day to remember as their annual gala basked in the summer sunshine. Gala King, 10-year-old Iain Stronach and Gala Queen, 12-year-old Gillian Sawers, were joined by their attendants Scott McLean, 5, and Ainsley Watson, 6, in a horse-drawn carriage proudly at the head of the parade.

South Ayrshire’s Library Service staff took their summer craft programme to Mossblown. And the local children who came along to the Library made all kinds of fun items - including the crazy summer spectacles in our photograph.
