The countdown is on to one of the highlights of the year for Ayrshire's green-fingered residents - the annual Ayr and District Flower Show.

This year's event takes place at Ayr Racecourse on Saturday, August 19 and Sunday, August 20 - and after months of hard work by the organisers, and of course those who have been painstakingly preparing their exhibits, it's all set for a blooming marvellous weekend.

This year's show will be attended by the Scottish Association of Flower Arrangement Societies, who will stage their Floral Art Show, entitled ‘A Perfect Day’, in the racecourse's Princess Royal Suite.

And the show doesn't begin and end with flowers and plants either - there will also be live musical entertainment on both days, a food market, and, for the young and young-at-heart, Lego models and a model railway.

A wide range of traders will be present on both days of the show.

A spokesperson for the organisers said: "We have had a great response from traders. The craft marquee will have more stands than the previous show.

"In fact there are so many we have extra stands in the Princess Royal Suite. Many new faces are joining us for the first time.

"We mustn’t forget all the horticultural traders, many of whom have supported our show since its beginning in 2017. Without them we could not have created the event we have.

"We hope all the various elements will come together to produce something the public want to visit.

"We must also thank Ayr Racecourse for providing us with an excellent venue. The indoor areas are ideal, with plenty of free parking and their on-site catering.

"Everyone is welcome to join us for a great day out. There will be something for everyone to see and enjoy so make a day of your visit."

The show is open from 10am until 5pm each day, with entry just £7 for adults - while children under 16 get in free if accompanied by an adult.

Unfortunately no dogs are allowed except assistance dogs.
