A planning application to fill the space underneath a bridge over a former Ayr railway line has taking another step forward after being approved in 2021.
The overbridge, situated at Limekiln Road, Newton, Ayr, was originally constructed in 1882 and was used for 100 years for coal drops from the nearby Falkland Yard.
Now plans by the Historical Railway Estate to block up the space underneath the bridge have been added to the National Highways Programme of works for 2023-24.
The space below the bridge has been used for various fly-tipping incidents, with reports of anti-social behaviour being made there.
A date for the filling operation has not yet been confirmed as the proposals currently sit with the Scottish transport minister, Fiona Hyslop.
A National Highways spokesperson said: "At the moment, our proposals are with the transport minister, we are now waiting for guidance on the next steps for the structure.
"Once we receive this information, we will be able to provide more details on when the work will begin, what it will entail and any potential disruptions to nearby roads."
