PEOPLE using two of South Ayrshire's busiest beaches this summer could win a £25 gift card - by doing nothing more than putting their litter in the bin.

The beaches at Ayr and Troon have now been ‘geofenced’ on the LitterLotto app, which means users who bin their waste using the app in these areas are now added into a special prize draw for the Scotland Loves Local cards.

LitterLotto is a free to enter prize draw that aims to help reduce litter through behavioural change, incentivising people to bin their litter responsibly.

Earlier this year, South Ayrshire Council (SAC) became the first in Scotland to join forces with Keep Scotland Beautiful and the behavioural change app.

To be in with a chance of winning, users need to download the free LitterLotto app on their smartphone or device, be on 'litter alert' when they are visiting the beaches, and use the app to take a picture of litter as they place it in the bin.

Each time a user submits a new photo, they will have another opportunity to win a prize.

The Scotland Loves Local South Ayrshire Gift Card was introduced in 2021 to support local businesses. more than 190 businesses are registered on the scheme across the area, including retail, hospitality, health and beauty, and leisure.

Councillor Martin Kilbride, South Ayrshire Council’s portfolio holder for buildings, housing and environment, said: “South Ayrshire beaches are very popular all year round with tourists and visitors, but especially during the summer months, and our waste management team work really hard to make sure that they are kept in pristine condition.

“Being in with the chance to win a Scotland Loves Local South Ayrshire gift card is another great incentive to encourage people to bin their litter, recycle responsibly, and keep our beaches beautiful for everyone.”

The authority's portfolio holder for economic development, Councillor Bob Pollock, added: “This is a fantastic way to give local businesses who are registered to accept the Scotland Loves Local South Ayrshire gift card a well needed boost, while also helping to keep our beaches clean.

“Over 190 businesses in South Ayrshire currently accept the card, and new businesses are registering every day.

"I would encourage everyone to download the app to be in with the chance of winning!”

Barry Fisher, chief executive at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: "It's really exciting to see South Ayrshire Council using innovative technology to target hotspot areas to protect busy beaches over the summer.

"We've been delighted with the engagement and success of our partnership with LitterLotto and South Ayrshire Council.

"The interaction we've seen from this partnership and our own is encouraging and engaging positively with the public has proven how eager people are to tackle the litter emergency.”
