Ayr Jazz Club celebrated its annual birthday party in style, recently, with a spectacular evening of music.

It featured music on June 28 from the Old Green River Band with new performers Wil Robinson (trumpet) and Paul Palmer (saxophone).

Next up on Friday, June 2 is a band who really enjoy playing the music of New Orleans - the Mississippi Dreamboats.

The band hails from the North East of England and includes some very talented musicians.

The Dreamboats have been fortunate in that, despite Covid and the subsequent loss of many jazz musicians throughout the country, their line-up has remained the same, except for the loss of the late Peter Wright, a well-missed and respected trumpet player.

The band is led by Paul and Liz Bacon.

Paul is a dedicated New Orleans drummer with wife Liz, who also featured with The Rae Brothers Jazz Band, starring on the front line with very melodic clarinet playing.

The front line also includes trombonist Jim Blenkin (another former member of the Rae Brothers Band) and in a second appearance at Ayr Jazz Club on trumpet, the Welshman Gwyn Lewis.

Completing the rhythm section will be the partnership of Spike Kennedy on bass and the very talented Sarah Thatcher, wife of the late trumpeter Norman Thatcher, on banjo and tenor guitar.

There has been significant interest shown from local people towards the club and visitors are always made most welcome.

Do come along to another excellent evening of jazz from 7.30pm on Friday, June 2 at The Fairfield Hotel, Fairfield Road, Ayr.
