A WELL-KNOWN charity has announced its shop in Troon is to close due to rising costs and a drop in its income.

Mary's Meals, which is situated in the town's Portland Street, says it's closing its six charity shops around the country - with the Troon store set to shut alongside those in Glasgow, Lochgilphead, Inverkeithing, Dunblane and Oban.

The Troon store has regularly seen a raft of volunteers for help for years, as Mary's Meals went from feeding 200 famine-stricken children in the year 2002 to more than 2.5 million 20 years later

The team said their loss in income coupled with rising costs contributed to the decision.

Daniel Adams, the executive director of Mary's Meals, said: "After much deep consideration, we have taken the very difficult decision to close our six charity shops and warehouse.

"In recent years there has been a steady decline of income from our shops – while the cost of operating them has continued to increase.

"This means that sadly the shops are no longer a viable source of income."
