EMERGENCY works are being carried out to deal with a damaged section of sewer pipe at Ayr Harbour.

Part of the sewer pipework has become dislodged and Scottish Water officials will now undertake repairs.

The company said it will be installing over-pumping at the next low tide to minimise any environmental impact before starting the repair of the damaged section.

A statement read: "The sewer is only accessible during low tidal times and our teams will be working throughout tonight [January 27] at these intervals to progress the urgent work.

"The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has been informed and we will continue to liaise with them."

Scottish Water added that it will be necessary to close South Harbour Street from the bottom of Fort Street to New Bridge Street, in order to carry out the work safely.

The statement added: "All traffic management will be agreed with South Ayrshire Council and we will work with people affected by the closure to minimise any disruption or inconvenience where possible.

"We would like to thank them for their patience and understanding."
