A MAN has appeared in court charged with attempted murder following a report of a serious assault in Ayr.

Four men were arrested after the incident on Main Road in Whitletts on Saturday morning.

One of them, 51-year-old Kevin Coyle, from Prestwick, appeared at Ayr Sheriff Court on Monday, January 23, charged with attempted murder and assault to severe injury, permanent disfigurement and danger of life.

Ryan Young, 33, of Westwood Crescent, Ayr, and Terence McIlwee, 40, of Main Street, Ayr, were also arrested and charged with assault.

Mr McIlwee was also charged with being in possession of an offensive weapon, namely a piece of wood.

A 52-year-old man was taken to hospital in Glasgow for treatment.

Mr Coyle made no plea during his brief appearance in private on January 23.

He was committed for further examination and remanded in custody, and is expected to appear in court again before the end of the month.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers received a report of a serious assault in the Main Road area of Ayr around 9.35am on Saturday, January 21, 2023.

“A 52-year-old man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment.

“Four men, aged 51, 50, 49 and 44, have been arrested and charged in connection with the incident."
