PLANS have been drawn up for a coastal caravan park, new homes and 'luxury' lodges at a site near Irvine.

The tourism and residential development would be located next to Kilmarnock Golf Course and just north of Barassie.

Landowner Forde Donaldson is seeking planning permission in principle to add 35 static caravans to the site along with seven "luxury" holiday lodges and a reception building.

Four semi-detached, two-storey houses would also be built on the near-two hectares of land at Dundonald Camp in Auchengate.

Located on Dundonald Crescent, Dundonald Camp currently contains more than 70 homes to the east of the semi-maintained grassland that makes up the proposed development site.

A supporting statement prepared by agents Cogeo and submitted to North Ayrshire Council said: "Dundonald Camp is proposed to be a desirable holiday location within the coastal region of Ayrshire that will provide visitors with seascape and landscape views and good links to nearby town centres and wider Ayrshire.

"This tourist proposal would appeal to families searching for a relaxed holiday on the coast of Ayrshire in a prime location which also provides strong access links to the nearby towns of Barassie, Troon and Irvine.

"Luxury lodges would also appeal to families, groups of friends, or couples looking for a relaxing weekend break."

Dundonald Camp was previously used during World War Two and served as accommodation for RAF Dundonald.

A decision on the application is expected by mid-March.
