South Ayrshire Council has been shortlisted as a finalist at the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards.

The awards, organised by Skills Development Scotland, recognise the commitment and achievements of both apprentices and apprentice employers across Scotland.

SAC was shortlisted in the ‘Large Employer of the Year – Promoting Diversity’ category for its Modern Apprenticeship (MA) programme.

The council’s MA programme is organised by the authority's Thriving Communities team, who work closely with services across the organisation including the local authority's own property maintenance, sport and leisure, and social services teams as well as with organisations such as the Ayrshire Roads Alliance, South Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership, and South Ayrshire Golf.

Councillor Bob Pollock, the local authority's portfolio holder for economic development,  said: “This nomination is a fantastic achievement and is a reflection of the dedication that the council has to provide a range of experience for young people and those seeking a new career path.

“The modern apprenticeship programme allows a breadth of knowledge and skills to be gained from business and administration, craft trade and social services to roads maintenance, youth work and horticulture, and is an excellent pathway for anyone that is not wanting to go into further education.

"Due to the variety of service areas across the council that are involved, individuals’ skills are attractive to local employers, which in turn helps our economy.

“I’d like to thank Thriving Communities and all of the service areas for providing these invaluable opportunities which are also breaking down barriers by promoting equality and diversity.”

The awards ceremony will take place, and the winners announced, during Scottish Apprenticeship Week, which runs from March 6-10.
