A CARING East Renfrewshire grandmother has been honoured for her amazing fundraising work over almost four decades.
Aileen Kane, 81, has coined in cash for the Children in Need appeal since 1985 and, this year, donated £2,500 to the worthy cause.
Now she has been named as the Sir Terry Wogan Fundraiser of the Year by those who run the annual BBC campaign.
Recalling the start of her fundraising odyssey, Aileen told the Barrhead News: “Initially I walked from Giffnock to the Sick Children’s Hospital in Glasgow, which was nine-and-a-half miles. I did that for around fifteen years.
“This year, I decided to walk around Rouken Glen pond. I was wearing Pudsey pyjamas and a bright pink tutu so I was really noticeable and could attract more donations.
“If you have Pudsey pyjamas and a pink tutu on, you are instantly recognisable and everyone has been so kind.”
Last year, Aileen and her two grandsons hosted a cake sale at her home in Giffnock and sold tasty treats to neighbours.
She travelled to Manchester last month to collect her award from BBC Radio 2 presenter Michael Ball and actress Mel Giedroyc as part of this year’s Children in Need celebrations.
“I felt so welcome at the studios,” said Aileen. “The effort the staff go to was admirable and it is really important to them to get it right for the children.
“They were all so lovely and so appreciative and it was interesting getting to see behind the scenes at the studios too.
“Every little bit helps. You don’t have to donate thousands – every single penny goes to the children and there are so many small charities that will benefit from any money raised.
“The fundraising isn’t difficult and it is so much fun. People are so generous and my grandson Ross was very helpful. He is a handsome boy and definitely helped to attract donations.”
Aileen’s love for the outdoors flourished by being part of the Eastwood Ramblers walking group, who have been very supportive of her fundraising efforts.
She added: “I’m definitely planning on fundraising again next year, although I think I’ll give the tutu a miss and find something even more ridiculous to walk around in.”
