AN AYR man who punched a pub-goer for calling him an ‘ugly b*****d’ while drinking in Prestwick has been ordered to pay a £1,000 in compensation.

Alan Philips, 40, admitted assault to severe injury after punching and headbutting another drinker who hurt his feelings.

Fiscal depute Rosslyn Walsh told Ayr Sheriff Court on November 23: “Witnesses were attending the Smuggler’s Bar in Prestwick consuming alcohol.

“After finishing drinks they decided to move on, passing the accused as they were exiting. The accused also exited.

The court heard the accused stated “big man, big teeth”, with one of the witnesses responding: “Big ugly b*****d then.”

Ms Walsh continued: “This hurt the accused, who then lunged forward punching [the witness] to the face.

“The witness observed blood coming from his nose and stated ‘you broke my nose, you d**k’.

“The disturbance led onto the roadway causing the traffic to stop.”

“The emergency department confirmed the injury was a nasal bone fracture.”

John Gallagher, defending, said Phillips had been going through an ‘acrimonious separation’ and, following the breakdown in the relationship, was drinking too much.

“It was over about as soon as it started,” Mr Gallagher said. “The whole episode has been a wake up call.”

Phillips was ordered to pay the victim £1,000 within 14 days.
