A PERVERT who raped a sleeping woman after her friend's birthday party has been jailed for four years.

Kerr Bryant, 24, preyed on his victim at Barhill Holiday Park in Girvan in February 2020.

Court papers state that Bryant struck when the woman was "asleep and incapable of providing consent".

Bryant - a first offender - was found guilty of the single charge of rape after trial.

He was put on the sex offenders register for an indefinite period as well as the jail time at the High Court in Glasgow sentencing.

Judge Lady Stacey said: "You know you have been convicted of a serious crime.

"You raped a young woman while she was asleep.

"She was a friend.

"She was out celebrating her best friend's 18th birthday party and she thought she was among friends.

"You had no right to interfere with her sexually.

"You did what you wanted with no consideration to her and you must understand society and the court takes a serious view towards that sort of sexual abuse.

"Your actions have affected the young woman - she felt shocked and numb and found herself becoming angry at herself for letting it affect her.

"She is putting her life back together with the help of friends and family.

"Be in no doubt your selfish act that night had consequences."

Lorenzo Alonzi, defending, earlier told the sentencing that Bryant continues to deny his guilt.

He stated that the author of his background report found that he "doesn't present with misogynistic attitudes" and has a "low risk" of re-offending.
