AYR United’s resurgence on the pitch looks set to be matched by major steps forward off the park after the club’s plans for a new stand on the north side of Somerset Park were given the green light.
A report on the application reveals that there were no public objections to the plans, which will see a cover erected over the open north terrace for the first time and a new seating area, permanent hospitality spaces and clubhouse built at the rear.
The Honest Men’s plans were submitted to South Ayrshire Council planning officials in July and were given the seal of approval at the end of last week.
A report by the local authority’s planning department says that 147 representations were received on the club’s plans – with 146 supporting the proposals and one, while described as an objection, also offering support for the development.
The new stand’s facilities will replace the hospitality boxes which were built at the back of the north terrace in 1995, and will be the most significant addition to the ground since a new wing was added to the Main Stand opposite in 1989.
The proposals also include the addition of a new vehicle access point to the stadium on Somerset Road, plus 27 new standard parking bays, two accessible parking spaces and landscaping works.
The planners’ report on the application states: “In terms of its design, the building, while contemporary in nature is not considered to detract from the character of appearance of the area, rather it is considered as an opportunity to improve the visual appearance and setting of the site.
“The provision of a vehicular access and some limited parking shall assist in the on-going operation of the sports stadium, and is understood from the submission to be primarily for staff and hospitality visitors, rather than being for general admission to all members of the public.
The adjacent properties will have a level of amenity which is commensurate with their location adjacent to the existing football ground.
“Additionally, given the nature of the use of the site, it is also recognised that any impact on residential amenity will be on an infrequent basis concentrated around the scheduled games, training and any other events at the club, rather than on a constant daily basis.”
