Ayr's new £8.5m sports facility remains on track, as councillors and local representatives look towards the finishing line of the project.

The council project, which is set to be completed in October this year, will feature some of the best sporting facilities around, with an eight-lane, 400m running track; six-lane, 60m indoor running track; and a field events area.

It will also boast a 3G all-weather pitch, along with fully accessible changing areas and a café.

Work began on the landmark project last July, and works are said to be progressing well, with the changing block and indoor facilities nearing completion, paving the way for electrics to be installed.

The 400m track has been laid and lined, and contractors are set to start surfacing the access roads, as well as undertaking general landscaping.

On completion, the facility - which is located on the former college site next to Ayr Academy - will also have 120 dedicated parking spaces.

Councillor Martin Kilbride, buildings, housing and environment portfolio holder for South Ayrshire Council, said: “It was fantastic to get a tour of the facility, it’s really taking shape.

"There was a buzz of excitement from those in attendance, many of whom were heavily involved in planning the facility. I have no doubt it will exceed all their expectations when it’s finished later this year.”

Councillor Brian Connolly, sport and leisure portfolio holder for South Ayrshire Council, added: “This multi-use facility is key to continued sporting achievement in South Ayrshire.

"Not only is it set to become a first-class training facility, but thanks to the purpose-built, all-seated grandstand, we will also be able to host top-class sporting events and competitions.”
