A MUSICAL theatre summer camp based on the hit Disney musical Encanto is coming to Ayr next month.

The programme aims to make a show within a week based off the box office smash film and it takes place from Monday, August 1 to Friday, August 5 with classes from 10am to 4pm held in Studio 24.

Organised by the Glasgow Academy of Musical Theatre Arts (GAMTA), the Summer camp will give children aged 5-13 the chance to hone their performance skills with teachers who have helped produce West End stars.

Sharon Graham, GAMTA’s principal, said: “The biggest thing we love to do in our year is our summer school.

“We wanted to focus on Encanto because it encapsulates the lovely themes and music and characters that would interest young people today.

“It’s about family, having fun, and loyalty, so we thought it was a really positive message to start off with.”

As part of the new GAMTA local initiative that began with a camp in Strathaven, Ayr’s Summer programme is one of many taking place across Scotland.

The camp will mark the launch of the Glasgow based company’s expansion into Ayrshire based classes, 30 years after its foundation in 1992.

Aside from allowing children to work with industry professionals and develop their talents, the camp will also encourage kids to make new friends, create new experiences, and develop their confidence.

Joanne Watson, GAMTA teacher, said: “The camp is so inclusive, everyone can work together, and I just love it. It doesn’t feel like a job it feels just like I’m having fun during the summer.

“Encanto is the biggest movie of the year, and everyone seems so excited about it. We thought it would be the perfect summer experience.”

A competition to decide which talented youngsters will get the two scholarships for the upcoming weekly Ayr classes will take place at the free GAMTA open day on Saturday, August 13 in Glasgow.

The scholarship will allow two talented youngsters to attend a year’s worth of lessons for free.

The five-day long summer camp costs £135 per child.
