There will be a rare opportunity for voters to quiz Ayr West candidates in person this week.

Fort, Seafield and Wallacetown Community Association will hold a ‘Meet the Candidates’ event at the Horizon Hotel, Esplanade, Ayr from 7pm on Thursday, 28 April : 7pm

Ayr West is one of the key wards as the parties vie for control over South Ayrshire Council.

All of the parties and independent candidates have agreed to be represented at this event, where they will present their policies and face voters’ questions.

The association said that a number of issues would be raised, including the cost of living concerns, the proposed demolition of the Citadel Leisure Centre, the urgent need for development and maintenance along the seafront, the need for a Community Hub in Wallacetown and the rapid growth in short term lets.

All residents in the Fort, Seafield and Wallacetown areas are welcome. The event is free and no prior booking is required.

The election candidates attending are: Derek McCabe, Conservative; John Duncan, Labour; George Weir SNP; Jamie Ross, Liberal Democrats; Gordon Bryce, Scottish Family Party and Bob Shields, Independent.

Association Chair Eric Armstrong states: “Since its formation last year the Community Association has become only too aware of the growing concerns being expressed by residents about a number of issues impacting negatively on their communities.

“We believe it is vital that all the West Ayr candidates are aware of resident’s priorities and are open to their constructive proposals. In this unique initiative we hope that these concerns can be addressed by the candidates and it is credit to them that they have all agreed to be represented at our ‘Meet the Candidates’ evening.

“It is now up to the community to make its voice heard. We hope as many residents as possible can join us to hear what the politicians have to say and ensure they go away with a clear understanding of local priorities.”
