Supermarket giants Lidl could be about to set up shop in Troon.

The budget retailer has submitted an application to South Ayrshire planning chiefs for a site on the town's Academy Street.

They have plans to take on the former Safeway store at the top end of the street, where there are currently a number of shops, including a Boots, Costa, Savers, and a charity shop.

The planning application makes no specific mention of  what will happen to these shops, but design documents suggest that only Boots and Costa would remain.

The planning application also states that if permission is granted Lidl intends to carry out "external alterations" and the erection of a trolley bay as well as some adjustments to the car park.

They plan to reduce the number of parking spaces from the 207 that are currently available to 144.

Parking issues have been raised by some nearby residents.

Colin Bone, from Troon, submitted a response to the plans, saying: “I have concerns about the new car park layout and how it may cause issue with the access to the rear of my property.

“I would like to know what the intention is with the terms of the car park and the impact it will have on the parking in and around the properties.”

Nathan Calderwood, who lives in Academy Street, said: “Can clarity be provided regarding ownership and access to the car park?

“Myself and neighbours require access to rear gardens and garages via the car park as traditional access is currently blocked by public amenities on Church Street lane.

“This has been raised previously and residents have been assured unrestricted access.

“As developments a few years ago did not remove the amenities on Church Street lane, as was expected, I am seeking assurances that our access would remain with any further development.”

Lidl have been contacted for comment.
