Nightclubs in Ayr closed last week following new Scottish Government rules that came into effect on Boxing Day, putting the kibosh on one Ayr venue's plans to stage a grand reopening.

They will have to remain shut for three weeks but can open if they operate as a pub with table service and distancing.

It’s disappointing for local business owners, who have endured much disruption to their income over the past 21 months since the beginning of the pandemic.

Furys Nightclub, which has been shut since March 2020, was set to reopen over the festive period, but the new rules put paid to that.

A spokesperson for the venue released the following statement after the new restrictions were announced: “When we closed our doors in March 2020, it’s fair to say we weren’t expecting or prepared for the journey that we had ahead of us.

“We have continued to assess and navigate the Covid-19 related challenges surrounding the hospitality industry, and, finally, thought it was our time to party again.

“Our team have been working tirelessly to prepare for our reopening over this festive period.

“Unfortunately, with the ‘clarity’ of the most recent Government criteria becoming available yesterday morning, our reopening at this time is unfortunately not now feasible.

“We are gutted.

“Massive thank you to everyone who has been in touch over the last 19 months, the support means more than you will ever know.

“We look forward to being able to reopen our doors again soon. In the meantime, please turn out to support your local venues in any way you can.”

Another venue that has had to shut its doors is Venue 38.

A spokesperson for the Carrick Street nightclub said: “In light of current updates, restrictions and helping to reduce the spread of the new variant Omicron, it is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we are cancelling all public events and performances including our Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and Hogmanay Events.

“This was a very difficult decision however our priority continues to be the well-being and safety of our staff and patrons.

“All tickets purchased to any event will be refunded via the original method of payment ASAP.

“We apologise for any disappointment caused and wish you all health and happiness during these times.”

The new measures were implemented in response to rising Covid cases in Scotland, with record daily totals being broken. The most recent daily total at the time of writing was 16.857 cases.

Some £375m in business support is available, the Scottish government said, following discussions with business organisations and councils.

Hospitality businesses are already eligible for top-up funding through the December and January Business Top Up.
