A GREEN group set up by a woman originally from Ayr has gained official charity status.

Paws on Plastic revolves around the simple but effective idea of using daily dog walks as an opportunity to pick up a few bits of litter.

The initiative began as a Facebook group in November 2018, and was founded by primary school teacher Marion Montgomery in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire.

As animals are naturally inclined to investigate discarded rubbish, the group has attracted dog owners who are keen to play their part in fighting plastic pollution.

By removing the litter members are helping to protect animals and wildlife both on land and in the sea from injury or illness.

Marion said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Paws on Plastic has now gained charity status.

“Many thanks to all our amazing members and our new trustees for all their support.

“I never imagined when I set up the group three years ago while off work through illness that we would reach this amazing milestone.

“I look forward to the new opportunities being a charity will bring to help encourage more and more dog owners to do their own wee bit every day to protect animals and the environment we all depend on.

“Our ultimate aim is to make it just a normal part of every walk.”
